DXP Cuba Libre

Stereo Dynamics Preset

This stereo dynamics preset is tuned for bringing out details and room tone in recordings of great sounding locations, and to let you listen to some of the virtues of DXP hi-res, low level processing. It was specifically created by one of the System 6k programmers to develop such subtleties in the wonderful Cuban music many of us are enjoying as an antidote to polished and controlled desktop music.

Use the Band Gain parameters on the 5Band M and S pages to adjust the spectral balance on centered and wide elements of the mix. Low level gain is disabled 20 dB below the DXP threshold at a ratio of 1:1.25. This setting can be changed in the 5Band page.

A reference tone at -20 dB will be subjected to a 3 dB increase in level. Unity gain is hit at Reference Level found on the Setup page. Further increase in low level may be obtained using higher Steer values in each band.

Preset Location: EQ & Dynamics #54

Note: Software 3.50 or higher is required.
Software version 3.50 is available to S6k users free of charge.

GM Tight Nonlin

Stereo Effect Reverb Preset

This stereo effect reverb preset was created by George Massenburg using the newly developed NonLin2 algorithm. NonLin2 provides the classic gate and reverse effect of the 80'ies, but adds several parameters to increase resolution and diffusion, and go way beyond its predecessors.

George says he's using this preset all the time. Not only on drums, but also as a dense space around vocals and guitars. And not only for stereo, but also in 5.1 productions between L and R surrounds. "Simply ... huge."

The preset can be changed in a more 80'ish direction by lowering the Hi-Cut to 2.36 kHz, and the Diffusion to 20%. Also try dialing through the Reverb Styles, which provides a wide variety of character and image control. The differences are most noticeable with Diffusion set to 0%. For more weird effects, apply 70% Twist and listen to the different Twist Types. Have fun!

George Massenburg is a legendary recording engineer and producer, awarded numerous times for engineering and producing, as well as for technical achievements. TC's history with George goes way back. As a true industry pro he has constantly been pushing us to raise the bar, and never give in to "good enough".

Software version 3.30 is available to S6k users free of charge.

Dorsal Wave

Multichannel Wave Preset

This multichannel wave preset displays some of the power of the boundary effect algorithm, Reflector. Along with neighbour presets, it was created by a TC algorithm designer who spent a weekend in the factory studio where he must have been smoking some pretty funky tobacco.

Set the Output Format parameter (fader 4) so it corresponds with the number of speakers used (5 or 6 main speakers). The Delay Multiplier (fader 1) adjusts the wave speed, FB Offset (fader 2) controls the number of waves, while Shade Offset (fader 3) makes the waves brighter when set to negative values.

For other twisted Swirl and Wave effects, try other presets in the bank applying the same adjustment techniques described above. Note that most parameters can be adjusted dynamically in realtime without introducing audible side effects.

Preset Location: Delay & Effects #84

Note: Software 3.30 or higher is required.
Software version 3.30 is available to S6k users free of charge.

SKY Convention Center

5.1 reverb from the Skywalker Sound Collection

This 5.1 reverb preset is part of the Skywalker Sound Collection. It sets the stage for a huge, hard surface in-door arena, in which up to four discrete sources may be placed using the View and Source pages.

Intended to create the ambience of a large-scale political convention, the decay time and correlation of the diffused response has been intentionally offset. Depending on the microphones used, and the distance from which they have picked up more or less dry audio for the scenario, it is recommended to adjust the ER Start parameters on the Source pages to get rid of low order reflections already present from the microphones, while still taking advantage of VSS5.1's multiple angle reflections to support localization and widen the listening sweet spot.

The Skywalker Sound Collection of presets includes stereo and multichannel reverbs and boundary effects created by some of the best audio engineers in the film industry. The Skywalker Sound Collection can be found in the first 3 decades of the Halls of Fame bank using software 3.20 and up.

Preset Location: Halls Of Fame #21

Note: Software 3.30 or higher is required.
Software version 3.30 is available to S6k users free of charge.

EMT250 Long Vocal

A great vintage Stereo Reverb preset created by Al Schmitt, particularly well suited for vocal.

Based on the new DVR2 algorithm, it emulates a classic reverb style, but the preset takes advantage of DVR2's Advanced Mode, which brings the original's resolution and sample rate up from 16/24 to 24/96. This type of reverb is dependent on an advanced modulation scheme, and Al has adjusted it to perfection, when taking the new controls and hi-res capabilities into account. Nevertheless, the transformer emulation was kept active.

Decay is set to 2.8 sec with a Predelay of 40 ms. The two extra outputs for Quad is turned down, but may be brought back up - and all other parameters of course should be adjusted to complement the source material.

Al Schmitt is a legendary, multi-award winning music recording engineer and producer.

Preset Location: Halls Of Fame #33

Note: Software 3.30 or higher is required.
Software version 3.30 is available to S6k users free of charge.

Beast Death 1

6.1 Reverb by Chris Boyes

This 6.1 reverb preset was created by Chris Boyes for a dramatic scene taking place in a huge underground grotto in the second movie of The Lord of The Rings, The Two Towers. Use the format control function to change output format to 5.1 if a discrete rear channel is not available.

The imaginary cave is created using tuned decay times in the main channels, suppressed low order reflections and the right balance between early and late parts of the response.

Chris Boyes was sound designer and lead re-recording mixer on recent movies such as The Lord of the Rings and Pearl Harbour. The Halls Of Fame bank includes several presets used in The Two Towers and Return of The King.

Preset Location: Halls Of Fame #74

Note: Software 3.30 or higher is required.
Software version 3.30 is available to S6k users free of charge.

Cincinnati Music Hall

6.1 Reverb by Michael Bishop

This preset was fine-tuned to provide RTC extension for Cincinnati Music Hall recordings. By adding delays, the preset can be adjusted to "move" the concert hall back wall to suit the recording session at hand. The 6th main channel (SrC) is used for height, which can complete the illusion of the performing hall around the listener in surround.

Preset Location: Halls Of Fame #70

Note: Software 3.30 or higher is required.
Software version 3.30 is available to S6k users free of charge.

Changes and enhancements from version 3.60 to version 3.69

New UnWrap™ HD
UnWrap is the world's de facto standard up-conversion stereo to 5.1 processor for dialog, music and sound effects. Contrary to one-size-fits-all solutions, UnWrap is a professional production tool, which provides a vast number of options and tweaking possibilities to the engineer in order to bring out the intentions behind an original stereo mix.

Software #3.69 includes UnWrap HD, an upgrade of the original algorithm. While maintaing backwards preset compatibility with UnWrap, UnWrap HD extends the algorithm's capabilities to extract dialog and enveloping sources from a stereo or LtRt mix with new Contour and Decorrelation settings. Typical applications include upconversion for film production, mastering and broadcast production for HDTV. UnWrap HD is 48-bit internal precision, and capable of running at any sample rate between 32 and 96 kHz.

5.1 Surround

Thomas Lund

This essay is presented as an introduction to surround sound for the studio professional working in smaller (20 m2 - 60 m2) control rooms.

Although originally developed for film, multi-channel surround formats offer unique creative opportunities for music mixing and many other applications.

Creative minds and critical audiences are beginning to understand that surround is not just about explosive action effects. It is also about creating a credible illusion of the sonic landscape of an open field, or of the din of an industrial workplace or of the ambience of a concert hall.

In short, it is about creating sound with a level of realism, immersement and involvement that is impossible with only two audio channels.

A rapidly expanding consumer base has already been exposed to the pleasures of surround sound for movies, music, computer games, television programming, etc. In light of the substantial investments in 5.1 audio equipment for the home, it is reasonable to expect a growing disenchantment with two-channel audio and strong demand for multi-channel software of all kinds.

In the early years of the new millennium, the two-channel paradigm will fade away as stereo gives way to multi-channel surround sound for transmission and storage of music, movies, computer games and television, providing unprecedented creative opportunities for producers, directors, recording engineers and performers.
The future is discrete, digital, multi-channel surround sound. And that future is now.

Clock & Synchronization in System 6000

Christian G. Frandsen

This document will discuss the clock, synchronization and interface design of TC System 6000 and deal with several of the factors that must be considered when using a digital studio.
We will go through different aspects in this area e.g.

  • What is jitter, what causes it and how is it removed on System 6000.
  • Measurements comparing a conventional clock design to that of System 6000.
  • Synchronization in digital audio studios in general.

The article is addressed to the users of System 6000 and other high-end digital studio equipment. It is meant to be a guide to an optimized digital studio setup. It is our experience that many of the problems in a digital setup can
be solved by knowledge alone, so hopefully the document will help to answer some of the questions and to clear
some of the typical misunderstandings relating to timing and clock generation.

The System 6000 wears so many hats—a superb reverb in stereo and surround and a complete mastering tool with surround monitoring control—that it is difficult to describe. I rank the System 6000 as one of the best reverbs and the finest audio processing tools on the market today, and, when I weigh the cost of separate components to do what the System 6000 can do, my choice becomes pretty clear. Oh, did I mention how much I like this machine? The System 6000 will not leave my studio until TC Electronic comes to repossess it.

"The version 3 software update is an incremental change for the System 6000. But this last incremental jump has transformed it from a very good system into a devastatingly good one. It's not a cheap option, and for stereo music work, it could be seen as overkill. For serious multichannel music or postproduction work, this surely rates as a 'must-have'."

The S6000 is a very mature processor. It is definitely high-end, with its performances and possibilities, and with its price. It is so powerfull and modular that it is a real "must have" for all the studios which are planning to work in 5.1. The S6000 has only one problem: it does not belong to us and we will have to give it back !

I have been constantly amazed at what the System 6000 has done, from the obvious asset of high sound quality and realistic surround reverb, to ergonomic design of both the software and the hardware. There's even a mic stand fitting for the Icon! Most importantly though, I think that the System 6000 is what we've all been waiting for.

One of the key features of the System 6000's reverb design is that several sound sources can be placed at different positions, and while natural reverb tends to dilute the ear's ability to resolve location, the TC system actually seems to enhance it. This is particularly effective when mixing for surround.

0dBFS+ Levels in Digital Mastering

Søren H. Nielsen & Thomas Lund

A sine tone at 0dBFS is often believed to be the maximum level obtainable from a digital medium.
Therefore it is typically the maximum level digital filters and analog circuitry in consumer equipment is aimed at reproducing.

As we have showed in previous papers, inter-sample peaks may be considerably higher than 0dBFS.
This paper examines the sonic consequences when 0dBFS+ signals are reproduced in typical consumer equipment. The performance of a variety of domestic CD players exposed to such signals are presented and evaluated.

I used UnWrap on a wide variety of source material, and was consistently impressed with the results I was able to achieve with a minimum of tweaking.
The resulting surround mix was astonishingly good, with, of course, the benefit of preserving all of Geoff Emerick's original equalization and effects.
Kudos to the Danish design engineers who developed this extraordinary product!

Everything that has put TC Electronic where it is today is present in the System 6000; the quality and persuasiveness of its reverb algorithms have transferred spectacularly into the surround domain, and the thoroughness and power of its acclaimed mastering dynamics have been thoughtfully transposed into the realms of multichannel processing. The Only frustration is knowing that there's so much more to come and not being able to play with it yet.
