TC Equips New DR Building

One of DR’s many sound editing studios equipped with AIR Speakers

DR (Danish Broadcasting Corporation) is Denmark’s oldest and largest electronic media enterprise. The corporation was founded in 1925 as a public service organization. DR is an independent, license financed public institution.

DR Radio comprises four FM-stations. Since 1996 DR has transmitted radio on the Internet, including daily transmissions of news and current affairs. In 1999 DR introduced accessibility via satellite dish reception and cable DR also offers 26 radio channels on DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) and the Internet.

DR TV comprises two channels; DR1 and DR2. Both channels are broadcasted with full national coverage as free-to-air signals via the new digital terrestrial television (DTT) platform. Broadcast continues on the analogue terrestrial network until analogue is shut off by end of October 2009. In addition, most of the channels’ content is freely available on demand as streaming and podcast on the Internet (and to a smaller degree to mobile phones).
More on DR’s new building "DR Byen" here.

This new state-of-the-art facility needed top quality equipment, and that’s where TC Electronic came into the picture. In 2004 TC Electronic submitted a tender for the Danish Broadcasting Corporation and was invited to an A/B listening test in Copenhagen. Subsequently, after a thorough selection procedure, DR chose Dynaudio Acoustics to supply the monitoring for the entire compound.

More specifically, DR chose the AIR series as the standard monitoring setup in all sound and video editing suites. One of the main reasons for the AIR Series being chosen among a considerable number of rival monitor brands was the possibility of integrating them in digitalized production environments in both stereo and 5.1 surround. Project leader Søren Henningsen from the Danish Broadcasting Corporation states: ”The AIR Series gives us the best possible alignment to the many different-sized facilities of DR Byen – right from the 10 m2 stereo speech room to the 50 m2 surround sound control room used for the concert hall. The users experience the optimum equivalence between the different AIR models.” Regardless of room conditions, the active AIR monitors ensure an authentic and optimum monitoring of whatever production Søren and his colleagues are working on – even if they have to move to another editing room half-way through a project.

The AIR speakers are standard throughout the building

All Dynaudio Acoustics AIR monitors in DR Byen are inter-connected through network and equipped with digital in- and outputs, making them suitable for the digital workstations throughout the building. The AIR Series is known for its precise sound reproduction, which stays consistent throughout the whole product line, and the unique handling possibilities allow the sound engineer to always obtain the optimal monitor performance. Søren Henningsen continues: ”The exceptional calibration software of the AIR Series, based on TC Link network communication, gives us unique options in terms of assigning each monitor set to the exact facility in which it is to be used. The advanced calibration possibilities, such as individual delay and extended Bass Management, allow us to eliminate the downside of an incorrectly positioned surround installation.”

The actual digitalization of DR Byen amounts to 98.5m EURO, and involves 250 workstations for pre-editing and 30 high-end suites. To accommodate all this, there are several System 6000s running to ensure the smooth flow and processing of signals.

Like Stig Larsen, broadcast project manager at DR Byen says: “Our main priority is to ensure maximum quality in transmission. We use DB max, DB 8 and P2 Level Pilot and they give me just that. TC equipment for me is reliable, top quality, remote controllable and it has the right amount of technical features.”
